Last weekend was the 24 Hour Readathon that happens three times a year: April, July and October. You’re meant to read for 24 hours straight and even though I started participating in my 30s, I don’t think I have ever once accomplished it. Thankfully, it has always been a very flexible event. Nowadays, I start on Friday night and read sporadically through the weekend, finishing on Sunday night. I love the camaraderie of reading in parallel with readers around the world, sharing photos of snack stacks and furry reading companions, or piles of books that may or may not be read this time around.
My first documented participation was in October, 2011. With the deterioration of Twitter, I participate mostly through Facebook now. I read a couple of children’s novels and am working my way through Silk which is a non-fiction work that traces the history of the textile. I am a sucker for textiles, and I am reading this hoping to be inspired to use up some of the silk that I bought so many years ago in Hong Kong.
To track my reading, I use StoryGraph. I was on GoodReads for a while, but it’s owned by Amazon, so I moved when I heard about StoryGraph. I am a twenty plus year member of LibraryThing, but StoryGraph is easier for tracking my reading, while LibraryThing is more for tracking my collection. Though my account there is woefully out of date.
July will be the next Readathon and I am already looking forward to it. I’ll be able to stock up from the local library and have really good snacks.
